For GraphQL and gRPC, the differences aren’t just cosmetic—they affect how you structure requests, debug responses, and automate testing.

GraphQL Support: Where They Diverge

Postman’s GraphQL Capabilities

Postman introduced native GraphQL support in 2019, and it’s been iterating ever since. The key features include:

  • You don’t need extensive automation or collaboration features
  • You’re working with proto files you have direct access to

For GraphQL-heavy development work, Insomnia’s IDE and schema exploration tools are genuinely better. But for gRPC, Postman’s reflection support and streaming capabilities make it the clear winner. And for teams that need to automate testing across both protocols, Postman’s scripting and CLI tools are unmatched.

The reality is that most modern API development involves multiple protocols. A pragmatic approach is to use both tools—Insomnia for day-to-day GraphQL exploration and Postman for gRPC testing and CI/CD automation. But if you have to pick one, Postman offers broader coverage and a more complete feature set, even if it comes at the cost of a heavier footprint.

The API landscape will keep evolving, and both tools are actively adding features. But right now, Postman handles the breadth of modern protocols better, while Insomnia excels at depth for GraphQL. Choose based on your primary workload—and don’t be afraid to keep both installed.
