Performance and polish vary. As an Electron app, Bruno can feel heavier than native alternatives, and some users report occasional UI hiccups on large collections. The team ships updates frequently, so this is a moving target, but it’s not as battle-tested as tools that have been around for a decade.

GraphQL support is functional but not deep. You can send queries and variables, but you won’t find the schema introspection and autocomplete experience that dedicated GraphQL clients offer.

Bruno’s MIT-licensed core is a meaningful differentiator for teams wary of vendor lock-in.

Against curl and a text editor, Bruno is obviously more comfortable, but it’s worth noting that the .bru format is human-readable. If Bruno disappeared tomorrow, your requests would still be plain text you could parse.

Who Should Use It

Bruno fits best with small to mid-sized engineering teams that already treat infrastructure as code and want their API collections to live alongside it. It’s also a strong pick for individual developers who value local-first tools and don’t want another account.

It’s a weaker fit for teams that need a hosted collaboration hub, non-technical stakeholders who want to browse and run requests without touching Git, or organizations deeply invested in the Postman ecosystem.

The Bottom Line

Bruno’s core insight—that API collections are code and should be versioned like code—is correct, and it executes on that insight well. The .bru file format is clean, the Git diffs are genuinely useful, and the CLI makes CI integration straightforward without an upsell.

It won’t replace Postman for everyone. The ecosystem gap is real, and the Git dependency is a genuine workflow constraint rather than a minor detail.
