Local-First Development: A Head-to-Head Review of Supabase Studio vs. Directus for Self-Hosted Projects

The Core Philosophical Divide

This distinction defines every other difference you will encounter. Supabase is for developers who want to code the logic and use the UI to inspect data. Directus is for teams who want the UI to be the primary interface for data manipulation, with code acting as the delivery mechanism.
Installation and Local Setup
Supabase Studio
Getting Supabase running locally is a breeze if you have Docker installed. The official CLI (supabase init and supabase start) spins up a full stack—including the Studio dashboard, Postgres, and the GoTrue auth server—in under two minutes. The docker-compose.yml file is transparent, and the CLI handles migrations neatly with SQL files stored in your repo.
The self-hosted route on a VPS is slightly more involved. You need to configure environment variables for the auth server, set up SMTP for email confirmations, and manage the Kong API gateway. It is not a one-click install, but the documentation is thorough. If you are comfortable with docker compose up -d, you will be fine.
Directus
Directus is equally Docker-friendly. A standard docker run command with a Postgres container and a few environment variables gets you a running instance. The initial setup is arguably simpler than Supabase because there is no auth server to configure out of the box—Directus handles users and roles internally.
However, the “local-first” experience is slightly different. Directus expects you to point it at an existing database or let it create a fresh one. Supabase: Full-Fledged Auth
Supabase ships with a production-ready auth system. You get email/password, OAuth providers (Google, GitHub, etc.), magic links, and phone authentication. The user management dashboard in Studio lets you view users, reset passwords, and block accounts. The Row Level Security (RLS) policies are managed directly in the SQL editor, which is powerful but requires a learning curve.
For local-first projects, the ability to run the auth server locally is a huge benefit. You can test the entire sign-up flow without hitting a third-party service. The JWT issuance is fast, and the API keys are scoped to your project.
Directus: Simpler, But Less Flexible
Directus has its own user system, but it is primarily designed for admin users and API access tokens. You can set up public registration, but it lacks the out-of-the-box social login providers that Supabase offers. You can build your own auth flow using Directus’s API, but you are essentially reinventing the wheel.

Supabase is a heavyweight. The full self-hosted stack includes Postgres, Kong (API gateway), GoTrue (auth), Realtime, Storage, and the Studio UI. This can easily consume 1.5GB of RAM just idling. You can trim the fat by disabling services you don’t need, but the default setup is resource-hungry.
Directus is a single Node.js process. It does require a database connection, but the overhead is much lower. On the same 2GB VPS, Directus plus Postgres idled at around 400MB. For a small project or a low-budget VPS, this efficiency is a major advantage.
However, Supabase’s heavier footprint buys you more integrated features. You don’t need to set up a separate auth server or real-time broker. It is a trade-off between convenience and resource efficiency.

Extensibility and Community
Both projects have vibrant communities and active development.

After running both in production, my recommendation is straightforward.
Choose Supabase Studio if:
