That single observation explains why the terminal emulator market, long considered settled, has quietly become competitive again.
Three tools dominate the conversation among macOS developers in 2025: iTerm2, the long-reigning feature king; Warp, the Rust-based upstart with an AI agent baked in; and Hyper, the Electron-based terminal that treats configuration as a JavaScript file. They make very different bets about what a terminal should be. Here’s how they compare on performance, features, and the trade-offs you’ll actually notice day to day.
The Three Contenders at a Glance

- On Windows or Linux? Hyper and Warp (Linux) are your options here; iTerm2 is macOS-only.
It’s also worth noting these aren’t mutually exclusive. Plenty of developers run iTerm2 as their daily driver and Warp for AI-assisted debugging, or keep Hyper around for a specific plugin-driven workflow.
